School building programme token bricks for polling day

2.24.44pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 30th Sep 2009

Commenting on the school building programme, announced by the SNP Government, Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Margaret Smith said:

“After two years of total paralysis in school building and planning, the SNP is now rushing to get some token bricks built by polling day.

“The money might start to dribble down to councils next year, but many schools are delayed until 2018.

“Most of the children studying in crumbling buildings will have left school before any improvements are made.

“Today’s announcement also raises further questions about what on earth the SNP is doing throwing more money away on the Scottish Futures Trust.

“Children in Scotland should have been the priority. The Government should have built more schools, rather than doubled the budget for this multi million pound quango.”
