McArthur urges action to solve discard problem

11.35.07am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 24th Sep 2008

Commenting ahead of the “red card for discards” meeting in Edinburgh on Thursday, which has been organised by the Scottish Government to reduce the discarding of fish, Liberal Democrat Fisheries spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

“Fish discards are a real problem. They are bad for fish stocks, frustrating for fishermen and damaging to the industry’s image.

“New initiatives are welcome, but as this government is developing a reputation for spin over substance, it needs to take care it is focussed on finding solutions and not simply performing PR stunts.”
